About this Job
Virginia Theatre Festival is seeking multiple House Managers to oversee front of house management and concessions operations on a pre-show basis for our Summer 2024 season. With a team of 4-6 managers trading off shows, the House Manager will be an integral member of the VTF team and work with the Operations Manager and Box Office Manager to execute the VTF’s front of house plan, including concessions management, volunteer usher training, ticket scanning, emergency management, audience services, and building security. Every member of our company should always have a willingness to learn, as well as a commitment to a safe and equitable work environment.

Pay Rate
$15.00 per hour.

Duration
June 24, 2024, through August 5, 2024. Varies, performance nights, working hours generally Tuesday – Saturday 5:00PM to 10:00PM evening performances and Saturday - Sunday 12:00PM to 5:00PM matinee performances.

JOB DUTIES

  • Prepare theater and lobby space for performance by checking the theater space, restrooms, concessions areas, and lobby floors to ensure cleanliness.
  • Set up ticket scanners prior to event.
  • Restock playbill inventory.
  • Receive seat count from Box Office Manager.
  • Prepare volunteer ushers and concessions workers for the show including training new ushers, concessions workers, and assigning positions.
  • Maintain security of concessions stock.
  • Open house at the appropriate time in concert with the Stage Manager.
  • Communicate with Stage Manager to start the show and end intermission.
  • Operate the concessions point of sale system.
  • Stand post in the lobby during the performance to monitor traffic from the street and oversee facility security.
  • Respond to emergencies by following the emergency plan.
  • Oversee the reset of the space after the performance, including cleaning theater and concessions areas.
  • Complete a performance report form and submit it to the Operations Manager after the performance including attendance report and concessions inventory totals.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Background in customer service, event staff, and/or crowd management.
  • Must be a positive and energetic person who loves theater and would like to be a part of a tight knit team.

Qualified candidates should exhibit attention to detail and be able to prioritize and execute tasks accurately in a fast-paced work environment. Applicants must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, collaborative, and communication skills. Every member of our company should always have a willingness to learn, as well as a commitment to a safe and equitable work environment.

This position reports to the Technical Director and ATD, and will support the build, run, and strike of our season’s productions.

Pay Rate and Benefits
17.00 per hour. We provide housing within walking distance to the theatre and various restaurants for those employed from out of town.

Duration
May 28, 2024, through August 4, 2024. This position will work 40 hours/week in variable schedules and is eligible for overtime with managerial approval. Daytime hours with some weekends.

Work Authorization Requirements
US work authorization is required.

JOB DUTIES

  • Perform skilled carpentry work using a variety of materials related to the construction of theatrical scenery
  • Assist with the planning, layout, construction, and installation of scenic projects while working closely with the ATD to ensure that the scenic elements of the productions are completed with an emphasis on quality and safety
  • Lead the Carpenters as assigned for scenic build, load-in, and strike
  • During the show run, work on shop projects as assigned
  • Ability to lift 50lbs.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Carpentry experience
  • Welding experience

18.50 per hour. We provide housing within walking distance to the theatre and various restaurants for those employed from out of town.

Show 1 Assistant Stage Manager: June 13, 2024, through June 30, 2024
Show 2 Assistant Stage Manager: June 6, 2024, through July 21, 2024

This position will work 40 hours/week in variable schedules and is eligible for overtime with managerial approval. Day, weekend, and evening hours required.

JOB DUTIES

  • Assist the Production Stage Manager through the rehearsal process and run of shows for one of our season’s productions
  • Assist the Production Stage Manager in the development of show related paperwork and its implementation
  • Set up and clean the space at the start and end of all rehearsals
  • Take line notes and assist in developing blocking notes during the rehearsal process, deliver lines when necessary once performers are off book
  • Act as the liaison between the backstage area and the Production Stage Manager during the technical process and the show’s run
  • Help supervise the backstage area in tandem with the ATD Run Crew Chief and coordinate the proper placement of scenic and stage elements and props
  • Occasionally fill in when necessary for the Production Stage Manager

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Previous experience in assistant stage management at the university or professional level
  • Ability to work under pressure while attending to the needs of multiple constituents
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Safety awareness and prioritization
  • Keen eye and ear for detail
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve conflicts
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related equivalents
